The name refers to the shape of the flowers produced in clusters during the spring and are similar to those of the closely related witch-hazel. Each flower consists of four to six (depending on species) slender stray shaped petals 1-2 long. They are fast growing , sun and drought tolerant and once established, cold tolerant as well.
Mature plants can range is size from a foot to 15 feet or more. It is much better to select a plant whose mature height fits its space.
